KinderUni 2024

Today, PhD students and postdocs from the Bonifazi Group joined the exciting KinderUni event, where curiosity and science come together for young minds!

This yearly initiative allows children to explore the wonders of science through fun, hands-on experiments. This year, our team prepared engaging activities including ball games, slime-making, and crafting bouncing balls. The children loved experimenting, learning, and discovering the science behind these creations – all while having loads of fun!

We’re thrilled to have shared our passion for science with the next generation of curious minds. Looking forward to inspiring more young scientists in future editions of KinderUni!

Kindergarten activity

Three PhD students from our group – Chiara Puccinelli, El Czar Galleposo, and Lorenzo Riccio – led by Laura Maggini, recently visited a local kindergarten to share their passion for science through a series of interactive experiments. The children explored the glow of phosphorescent bouncing balls, measured the acidity of solutions using red cabbage as a natural pH indicator, and investigated the properties of magnetic materials. These activities were designed to be fun and accessible, introducing basic scientific concepts in a hands-on way that encouraged curiosity and participation.

At the end of the event, each child was awarded a certificate to recognize their engagement and successful completion of all the experiments. Outreach activities like this are an excellent way to make science approachable and enjoyable for young children, showing them how science relates to the world around them. By sparking curiosity at an early age, these events can plant the seeds for future learning and foster an appreciation for discovery and problem-solving.

Organization of STiBNite/VIT Summer School: Self-assembled organic materials

Sponsored by two of our on going EU projects, VIT and STiBNite, the summer school took place at the UniVie Skylounge conference room on 4-5 July 2022.

We were delighted to host stimulating lectures both by external speakers and consortia representatives on the topic of self-assembled organic materials.

Big thanks to our wonderful speakers Renaud Nicolay, Francesco Picchioni, Chiara Gualandi, Timothy Swager, Richard Kelly, Laura Maggini, Takuji Hatakeyama, Emilio Perez, Milan Kivala, Susana Otero, Alexander Kros!

For more information about the STiBNite and VIT projects.

These projects have received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie-Sklodowska-Curie grant agreements No 956923 and 101008237.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science

In occasion of the “International Day of Women and Girls in Science”, Bonifazi group @ Institute of Organic Chemistry, UniWien, is organizing IUPAC Global Women’s Breakfast 2022 taking place online on February 16th.

The aim is to celebrate the accomplishments of women in science and to inspire younger generations to pursue careers in science.

The theme for this year is “Empowering Diversity in Science”. The program will include talks from scientists in academia and industry on their personal experiences as women in science. To create mutual connections, there will be a theme quiz and a panel discussion.

You are very welcome to join us on February 16, 08:45 CET with this link.

Ö1 Kinderuni Science Holidays 2020

Gianvito Romano, Dong Min Lee and Dr Antoine Stopin participated to the Ö1Kinderuni Im Rahmen Der Science Holidays 2020, to introduce local schoolchildren to the research they perform as part of the Decochrom and Charisma EU funded projects. The children were introduced to the concepts of electricity, circuits, batteries and devices, and enjoyed preparing “lemon batteries” and use them to light up LEDs and electrochromic displays.
